The Week in Bentos: September 6-9, 2011

by Wendy Copley on September 9, 2011

Here are this week’s lunches! Lots of ’em!

Monday

Monday was a holiday, so we didn’t have school.

Tuesday

Preschool Bento #143

On Tuesday Augie had red and green grapes, a PB&J cut into a star shape, leftover hot dog chunks from dinner the day before, watermelon and sugar snap peas.

You’ll notice that there is a chunk of melon missing on the left side — Augie nicked food out of one of the bento boxes when I was taking photos every day this week. The kid is really excited about lunch!

Second Grade Bento #474

Wyatt’s lunch was very similar to Augie’s: mini bun with jam on it, red and green grapes, a strawberry, hot dog chunks and a tub of catsup for dipping. There are actually two skewers of hot dogs but you can only see the top one in the photo.

Snack Bento #175

I also included a small sidecar box with Wyatt’s morning snack of strawberries and pretzel thins.

Wednesday

Preschooler and Second Grader Bentos #475

On Wednesday the kids had almost exactly the same lunches so I photographed them together. Augie’s box is on top, Wyatt’s below. They both had grape tomatoes, strawberries, goldfish crackers and turkey meatball chunks, but you can see that there are subtle variations between the two boxes. Augie has more tomatoes because he loves tomatoes. Wyatt is so-so on them so I added more strawberries to his lunch. I also put Wyatt’s meatball chunks on skewers, but I’m not so sure Augie can handle a pointy stick in his lunch yet, so I just put his straight in the box.

Thursday

Preschool Bento #144

Thursday I went with a space theme for both kids. Augie’s lunch had a biscuit “astronaut” (yeah — I know it’s a stretch), strawberries, grape “planets” and baked tofu with a flying saucer and star cut-outs. I added a little oomph to the flying saucer with food-safe markers. Read more about this technique here.

Second Grade Bento #476

Wyatt’s lunch was the same but his tofu had a rocket instead of a flying saucer. It also included pretzel thins for his morning snack.

Friday

Preschooler Bento #477

On Friday, Augie had the last of the grapes, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut into the shape of a man, grape tomatoes and chunks of turkey meatballs.
