Thank you to LUNA Protein for providing me a LUNA Protein sample pack to review. The opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint.
I have to be honest: I would never hire myself to write a review of protein bars.
I don’t go to the gym, I don’t lift weights, and I don’t enjoy eating protein bars at all. In fact, when my kids asked me what a protein bar was, I described them like this:
“Well, they’re made for grown-ups and they have protein and vitamins and stuff in them, but they taste really yucky on their own so they cover them in chocolate to make you want to eat them.”
Would you hire me? Yeah — probably not.
All that being said, LUNA sent me a box of their LUNA Protein Bars and I approached them with an open mind. I’ve had LUNA bars in the past and they were OK, but not something I would ever seek out or purchase. I was willing to have my mind changed though.
I decided to think of the them as a filling, chocolatey between meal snack. You see, I’m one of those terrible mom cliches. I fix my kids a healthy breakfast every morning and pack up lunches for them. But in the morning rush I often forget to eat breakfast myself. Then around 11 am when I’m at the park with Augie or out running errands I realize that I’m starving. So I put the LUNA Protein bars in my bag to have on hand for a mid-morning snack.
So what did I think?
Eh. They were all right.
They were filling enough to tide me over until lunch but they were still under 200 calories. Each bar has 12g protein, 3g fiber, calcium and folic acid. They’re high in sugar — averaging 14g per bar — and that makes them really, really sweet. But even with all that sweetness they still had that yucky protein bar flavor. Of the five flavors I tried — Cookie Dough, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate, and Chocolate Cherry Almond — the Chocolate Cherry Almond was my clear favorite. It was almost delicious, but not quite.
Would I buy them? No, probably not. (Sorry, LUNA!)

i LOVE protein bars!! =)
I remember liking Tiger’s Milk bars as a kid, but it’s been years since I’ve had one. I do like a couple of the luna bar flavors I’ve tried. Nutz over Chocolate? ha, yeah that’s one that I like. Of course, chocolate is playing a staring role.
Does adding all the protein make it taste terrible? Because I really like the Chocolate Peppermint Stick and Caramel Nut Brownie flavors of regular Luna bars. I always have them on hand for the same reasons you mention: Even though I can make meals for the kids in the morning, I can’t always find the time for me to eat. So I grab one of those instead. It works great for an easy meal for me, so I’d be willing to try the protein version. I eat enough meat though, I probably don’t really need the extra protein!
I am in the “protein bars are icky” camp! I am tempted to try them sometimes, since I do get hungry after working out and am generally lacking in certain vitamins and proteins, but I also have soy allergies and most protein bars are mostly soy.
I have never tried Luna bars but I am a big fan of protein bars in general. I am a sucker for chocolatey snacks AND like you, I often forget to eat breakfast until it’s too close to lunch. Plus with breastfeeding I crave snacks pretty often and like to try to have something reasonably healthy around to grab. I’d like to try these - the flavours sound good to me!
i think sometimes they can be gross but I love the LUNA ones their awesome

I never had the protein bard but overall I like Luna Bars. Â They are not the candy bars I would love but I am a little too old to eat candy everyday.Â
I’ve found one or two brands that I like, but many I’ve tried don’t appeal to me. It really depends on what flavors they offer. I’d love to give these a chance.
I absolutely love Luna Bars! I buy them from Trader Joe’s all the time. The smores bar is my favorite.
I haven’t had protein bars in ages, but I remember them having almost a gritty texture that took some getting used to. Still, they are great for that I’MSTARVING! NOW!!!!! sort of snack. I’d definitely be up for trying some chocolate-coated snackies! 🙂
I actually love these Luna bars! I had a Gastric Bypass Surgery a little over a year ago & it is very important to get all of the protien I need each day. Believe it or not these bars actually have a lower amount of sugar than most protien bas. Some only have 6 units of protien but 30 units of sugar & they call themselves potien bars! They should be called Sugar bars! Because I also has MS I try to eat health anyways. Being inactive from the MS made me gain weight (that & the fact that my favortie hobby is baking) I can’t eat all of the goodies I bake anymore so these bars are a treat to me. The problem is that I cannot get them in my town. I have to drive over an hour to get to a store that sells them & then I have only been able to get the Chocolate Mint. I can order them off-line but I would really like to try some of the other flavors before I order a whole box! Just finding them so I can sample some other flavors is my problem. Winning the samples of these bars would be a perfect answer for my problem!
I actually really like protein bars… the Luna chocolate peppermint stick is my favorite. Â or maybe that’s just a regular Luna bar and not the protein kind? Â who knows… but i’m ok with protein bars, I guess.

The only protein bars that I do enjoy are CLIFF Bars…do those count? Other than that even Fiber bars are too powder-y tasting for me.

I actually like protein bars! They’re always pretty dense, but I’m a sugarholic, so the sweetness doesn’t bother me. I tend not to buy them often, though, because they’re pretty expensive.
I’m afraid to try them since I’ve heard so many negative reviews!
Sooo, I really want to like protein bars.  If they have enough chocolate and some peanut butter I would definitely eat them…..but they have to be on sale (really, really on sale) for me to buy them.Â
