February 26, 2010: Augie checks out his first pineapple. He was doubtful about it until I cut it up and let him eat it and then he decided pineapples are a good thing.
February 27, 2010: Wyatt has been giving Augie tooth brushing lessons in the evenings.
February 28, 2010: Zach finally gets to meet his new niece. He was traveling for work when she came home from the hospital and then he caught a cold, so he had to wait a few weeks to see her.
March 1, 2010: Batman’s vehicles are at the ready in case a diabolical crime occurs in Gotham City!
March 2, 2010: Ah yes! My morning cup of tea. I bought this mug a few months ago and it makes me happy every time I drink from it.
March 3, 2010: Our messy living room.
March 4, 2010: Augie emptied all the blocks out of their box and settled in to play with a toy.
February 19, 2010: Augie loves, loves, loves jumping right now and he especially loves holding onto the edge of his crib and going up and down. Sometimes Wyatt likes to join in by jumping with him.
February 20, 2010: This is my new niece, Evelyn. Isn’t she a little snuggle bunny? She was born on the 15th, but we had to wait 5 whole days to meet her because we all had terrible colds and I really didn’t want to pass on our germs to such a tiny little baby. When we were finally well enough, we went to Erin and Bryan’s to see her. We are so happy she has joined our family.
February 21, 2010: Though it looks like Augie is reading to Wyatt here, Wyatt is actually telling Augie the story of Officer Buckle & Gloria. Like all of Peggy Rathman’s books this is one of our favorites. We often quote the safety rules in it to the boys, our favorite being “Safety Rule #1: Never stand on a chair with wheels!”
February 22, 2010: Wyatt and I played a quick game of Trouble while Augie finished his breakfast. He beat me.
February 23, 2010: The boys goof around in their room before bed time
February 24, 2010: Augie likes to lay on our bed while I fold laundry.
February 25, 2010: Playing on the school playground after Kindergarten pick-up with some of the kids from Wyatt’s class. There is some kind of fad with using these swinging rings all of a sudden. I’ve been taking the boys to play on the playground after school for months now and I think I’ve only seen kids use these rings once or twice. Then, this week there are suddenly kids swinging back and forth constantly. Huh.
February 12, 2010: I made a batch of hard-boiled eggs for breakfasts and lunches and put them in a carton in the fridge. Zach and I got our wires crossed when I told him where they were and this is what ended up happening when he gave one a good whack on the counter to peel it.
February 13, 2010: Oh. My. God. This is one of those humiliating motherhood moments like no other. I was checking Wyatt’s homework over before I sent it off to school and I noticed this drawing at the bottom of the page where he was practicing writing his P’s. It’s a picture of a guy shooting a gun at someone and saying, “HA HA HA HA”. I didn’t even know Wyatt knew how to spell “ha ha”. He says it was a good guy shooting a “bad guy”, but I was still appalled.
February 14, 2010: Tubby time!
February 15, 2010: Wyatt was off school for winter break this week so I tried to get us out of the house every day to do something fun. This day we went up to Tilden park to ride the steam trains. It was the first time we’d gone with Augie since he’s been aware of his surroundings and I was curious to see how he liked it. When we took Wyatt at about the same age, he was so scared that we dubbed them the “terror trains”, but it ended up that Augie thought the ride was pretty fun. (Wyatt loved the trains the next time we rode them, by the way…)
February 16, 2010: Zach let Wyatt play with his phone as a reward for being well-behaved at dinner. He likes to play Doodle Jump and he’s pretty good at it. Note the little red socks on the floor under Augie’s high chair. He takes his socks off practically every time he eats a meal.
February 17, 2010: Yay! Yay! YAY!!! My new camera came! This is one of the photos I took the first day. I used the highly sophisticated stick-out-your-arm-and-click method of photography.
February 18, 2010: For another fun vacation activity I took the kids to the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Here August works on building the Golden Gate Bridge.
February 5, 2010: As I mentioned last week, my camera started flashing an error message and stopped taking pictures. I loaded Augie up into the car and headed to the camera repair shop in Oakland where we took it when the auto-focus stopped working. After a 45 minute drive through Friday afternoon traffic, this was the what I was met with when I got to the shop. The big sign says that the store will be closed from October 22 to November 13. Reading this at the beginning of February was my first hint that something was amiss. The other sign was posted by the insurance agency next door and said that they hadn’t heard from the owner since he closed in October. I hope nothing bad happened to the guy, but I was also totally bummed to make that long trip for no reason. Then, to make matters worse, Augie pitched a fit when I went to put him back in his car seat. As I was wrestling him into his seat, I started catching whiffs of some horrible smell. After I got him in the car, I checked my shoes to see if I stepped in dog poop but they were clean. I started looking around on the ground and pretty soon I deduced that when I’d parked the car, I’d run over a Burger King bag filled with poop. Yuck!
February 6, 2010: Over the past few months, Wyatt has been collecting medium sized stones from our yard and various parks we visit and then placing them on top of our mailbox. I find this to be totally annoying because every time I get the mail I’m afraid that rocks are going to fall on me and I’m even more scared that they’ll fall on our mail carrier. I was taking them off every few days, but he always puts them back on so eventually I just kind of gave up. But then the other day he added three huge dirt clods and an old dog bone. This is where I draw the line.
February 7, 2010: Look at our sweet-faced little buddy! Love him!
February 8, 2010: Look at this tough-faced little buddy! I love him too!
February 9, 2010: Wyatt had a tough play date after school. It was one of those days where both boys wanted to play, but neither was really up to it. There was lots of arguing about who was the boss of who and neither was able to be distracted, so the other mom and I decided to cut our losses and keep the boys at our respective homes. Wyatt was feeling pretty fragile when we settled back in and he decided that he needed some hot chocolate, graham crackers and jigsaw puzzles with his mom to feel better, so that’s just what we did.
February 10, 2010: I went to the grocery store to stock up and I was there for over 20 minutes before I noticed that I was wearing my slippers! In my defense, they have rubber soles, so they feel very much like shoes, but still — that’s just ridiculous!
February 11, 2010: When the boys and I got up in the morning, they started fighting over toys almost immediately. Despite my best efforts to distract and redirect them, neither of them could go more than about a minute and a half without aggravating the other. I’m not very tolerant of screeching before I’ve even had the chance to put the kettle on for tea, so I reached my limit very quickly and decided to separate them. I put up the baby gate and settled Augie into the living room with some toys and set Wyatt to the task of getting dressed in the kitchen. Before the water had even come to a boil, the two of them had both moved over to the gate and were giggling and playing nicely with each other. Brothers! They can’t live with or without each other!
January 29, 2010: We scored this awesome Lego construction book at the library on Thursday afternoon, so Wyatt spent some time with his Lego sets on Friday morning, using it for inspiration.
January 30, 2010: I broke out the waffle iron for the first time in years. It might even have been the first time I’ve made waffles since Wyatt was born! I used the quick waffle recipe from Mark Bittman’s, How to Cook Everything which was OK, but maybe a tad too egg-y for my tastes.
I like my waffles (and my pancakes and my french toast) with peanut butter and maple syrup on them. Weird, right? I started eating them this way when I was a little girl because that’s how my brother liked to eat them and I thought he was pretty cool. When we were in Iowa at Christmas time, I saw my niece eating her waffles with peanut butter and syrup and I was totally floored because I never see anyone doing this. Then I realized who her dad is. Duh.
January 31, 2010: Ah, a little Mythbusters before bed! We are huge Mythbusters fans. It’s one of the few shows that we all like to watch together. We do check to see what the myths are on each episode before letting Wyatt watch them because some are not appropriate for 5 year olds, but most of the time they’re OK. Zach and I like how it makes science exciting and fun and Wyatt just likes that it’s exciting and fun. He has no idea that the show is sneakily teaching him about the scientific method.
February 1, 2010: I got a big honkin’ order from Shutterfly in the mail. These are about 6 months worth of my Project 365 photos from last year. I kind of fell down on the job with printing them around May.
February 2, 2010: I like to go to the school playground for an hour or so after school to let Wyatt run off some energy. There are usually a few other Kindergartners there too, so he has someone to play with. This week was “spirit week” at school and Tuesday was “crazy costume day” so Wyatt of course wore his Batman outfit.
February 3, 2010: I took Augie to get his hair cut in the morning and he was so traumatized by it that I felt like I needed to cheer him up with a madeleine and trip to the playground. There is a little fenced-in toddler playground a few blocks from the hair place with a giant sandbox and a couple of ride on toys and he had fun goofing around there for a bit.
February 4, 2010: Augie needed a bath and a change of clothes late in the afternoon and when Wyatt saw that I put him in his Batman shirt he immediately needed to change into his matching shirt too. Wyatt has been totally and completely obsessed with Batman and the idea of building a Bat Cave under our house this week. He started talking about it when I picked him up from school on Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. and he did not stop talking about it until he went to sleep at 8:30 that night. That’s right — I got to listen to him talk about his construction plans for FIVE HOURS. I’m all for encouraging creativity and all, but he would look at me every two sentences to gauge my reaction to his latest revelation and after awhile it’s hard to muster much enthusiasm even when you are being informed that the Bat Cave will have an elevator and a microwave in it. When he came into our room to wake me Thursday morning, the first thing he told me was that he’d figured out how to get the bulldozer and the digger into our back yard, so he needed me to give him the phone number of some builders to call them and tell them to come over to start work while he was at school.
January 22, 2010: Here is a view of the inside of our fridge. Some items of note: the Brita filter (which dominates our fridge and gets used and filled about 10 times a day), leftover Hungarian paprika soup (shockingly bland), eggs, eggbeaters, hippie bread, jello cups, chocolate mousse cups (not very good), raita and whole wheat pitas (awesome, delicious, Weight Watcher snack), a mixer bowl full of chocolate chip cookie dough (awesome, delicious, non-Weight Watcher snack), cauliflower, snap peas, and more cauliflower.
January 23, 2010: Zach bought Wyatt a Lego Batman game on a whim a couple weekends ago. Wyatt loves it. He loves it so much that he’d be perfectly happy if that’s all he ever did, all day, every day. He’s only allowed to play on weekends though.
January 24, 2010: The contents of my purse:
Peets coffee gift card
CVS coupon
Flip video camera
Reward sticker from doctor’s office (I was very good)
Pens and pencils
Hair brush
Ribbon lanyard for my keys that I’ve been looking for everywhere
January 25, 2010: Our refrigerator door is home to all sorts of crap: menus, school papers, drawings, etc.
January 26, 2010: Our back yard is depressing in the winter. The grass is looking pretty good from all the rain though.
January 27, 2010: I’ve been plugging away at reorganizing my desk and craft supplies little by little. I picked up this shoe organizer at Target to hold my Cricut cartridges and my punches. I have to admit, I was kind of shocked to see how many Cricut cartridges I have! I think I might have a little problem…
January 28, 2010: Augie recently learned how to climb onto the rocking chair in the office and delights in getting up and making it rock.
