Lunch Box Idea List

Lunch Box Idea List | Wendolonia

The same scene plays out every weekday morning in kitchens across the country: a tired parent leans forward with one arm holding the refrigerator door open, eyes scanning the shelves for something to pack into a lunch box. What do we have in the house? What do we have that’s healthy? What do we have that he will eat?

Toddler Bento #44: August 31, 2010

I’m faced with the same daily questions and after months of starting from scratch — and getting into ruts — I finally decided to write down all the foods my sons like that can be eaten cold or at room temperature. I asked friends and blog readers to send me their suggestions as well and came up with a fairly comprehensive list.

Not all kids will eat everything on here of course (my son wouldn’t touch carrot sticks if his life depended on it) but even the pickiest eaters will find some things on this list that they’ll enjoy.

Make your life easier on hectic mornings — download a printable version of this list, print it and stick it to your fridge for instant inspiration:

Carbs/Tummy-fillers

  • whole grain crackers
  • pretzel sticks
  • mini-muffins
  • goldfish crackers, cheddar bunnies or other snack crackers
  • pretzel thins
  • bagel chips
  • mini-rice cakes or rice crackers
  • cooked ball of rice
  • leftover pasta — toss with some chopped veggies and vinaigrette or a little olive oil, garlic salt and parmesan.
  • granola bars
  • banana bread, zucchini bread, or other quick breads
  • cereal bars
  • dry cereal
  • mini-bagels
  • hot dog buns, hamburger buns or dinner rolls
  • garlic toast
  • pita bread — I usually toast these so they don’t get soggy. Mini pitas are fun or you can cut a big one into wedges.
  • leftover pancakes or toaster waffles — mini-waffles go over especially well.

Preschooler Bento #85: October 14, 2008

Fruits

  • apples slices or chunks (dip in pineapple juice to prevent browning)
  • berries — strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • bananas
  • melon chunks — watermelon, honeydew or cantaloupe
  • dried fruit — raisins, dried cranberries, dried apples, banana chips, etc.
  • canned peaches or pears — drain and rinse with water to remove excess sugar.
  • applesauce
  • pineapple chunks
  • orange or clementine wedges

Preschooler Bento #31: June 20, 2008

Veggies

  • carrot sticks
  • sugar snap peas
  • red bell pepper strips
  • cucumber slices
  • celery sticks
  • grape tomatoes
  • steamed green beans
  • steamed broccoli spears
  • frozen peas — run them quickly under warm water to start them thawing
  • frozen corn
  • edamame

Preschooler Bento #45: July 18, 2008

Proteins

  • leftover meat from dinner cut into chunks — you can send almost anything: roast chicken, pork roast, chicken legs and carne asada leftover from tacos are all things my kids have enjoyed.
  • chicken or turkey sausage with bbq sauce or catsup for dipping
  • deli meats — turkey, ham, salami
  • beans
  • peanut butter “sandwiches” made with crackers or graham crackers
  • taquitos with salsa for dipping
  • baked tofu
  • quesadillas
  • mini-burritos
  • mini-pizzas — top mini-pitas with sauce, cheese and pepperoni
  • hard boiled eggs

Preschooler Bento #155: March 11, 2009

Dairy

  • yogurt
  • cheese cubes
  • cheese slices
  • cottage cheese
  • string cheese, Laughing Cow, Babybel or other small single-serving cheeses

Hi, I am new to your blog and when I tried to download and print the list it said I needed a password to do so.
Just wondered if I could gain access to the PDF?

Thanks so much for letting me know! That should be fixed now!

  • Sophieandmomma

Thank you so much for these ideas.  They are fresh ideas to me!!!!  I mean…regular meals do not have to be glum you know?  You just made food “fresh” and exciting!  I shared them on a forum I’m involved in.  :)

Wow i want to come eat lunch with you!!!

  • Ryanmegs

Love this! I just started making my own version of bento meals for my almost 4 year old. He is super picky, and the shapes and colours have helped. He gets to pick out the shapes of the cookie cutters, etc. and I have fun making the plate look pretty and fun for him to eat! I’m trying this out now so I get better at it once I go back to work in a few weeks, so I can whip something up quick for lunch/dinner for him. :)

  • Counting Coconuts

Fantastic list – just shared it on my Counting Coconuts Facebook page. :)

Hi!  I’ve been looking into Bento Boxes for my girls’ lunches but the problem I keep coming back to…is how to keep them cold…specifically the cheeses and meats.  With all of the latest news on lunch boxes not being insulated enough and food is spoiling by the time the kids eat it…I want to make sure I have that base covered (yes just one more thing to make the whole lunch process even MORE of a pain in the butt).  Any thoughts on this?

  • Debra Pierson

Thank you for this list!  Now that school is back in session, I am packing lunches for my two girls each day.  I have a super-picky eater to accomodate, so I am open to new ideas.  Thank you!

  • Eran

    Add Edamame to the list!

  • http://www.wendolonia.com/blog wcopley

    Excellent suggestion!

  • Ash

    Hey Wendy,

I LOVE YOUR LIST!!!  I’m a toddler teacher in Ohio and one of my parents recently told me about your website!  Your list is wonderful!!  in fact i am printing it for a few of my parents who send the most BORING lunches on earth for their toddlers.  HOWEVER i wanted to remind everyone to check with their states requirements for lunches…  in Ohio a pretzel can’t count as a grain, nor can cereal bars…  they count as nothing toward the requirements in fact!  I love the idea of using the cupcake holders as your container because it is a great way to make sure you have enough of one item to also meet requirements!  Thank you so much for your blog!:)

  • http://www.wendolonia.com/blog wcopley

Hi Ash! Does your school have requirements about what parents are supposed to pack in their kids’ lunches? I’ve never actually heard of that. Thanks for the reminder for parents who need to follow those guidelines.

So, do your kids warm up stuff at school or is everything eaten cold?

  • http://www.wendolonia.com/blog wcopley

When my youngest was at day care, his babysitter would warm his lunch up but once my kids start preschool they don’t have access to a microwave so everything is eaten cold or at room temp. I do send warm food in a thermos sometimes though.

  • Elizabeth Johnson

Are those paper cupcake holders? They look thicker and slightly rubberized, and therefore reusable and washable. Can you share your source, please?

  • http://twitter.com/MomToSamCO Angela W.

    Great idea.

  • Carrie

I’m assuming they are the reusable silicone baking molds (muffin/cupcake liners). I don’t know where she bought hers, but you can find them on Amazon (I bought some at Marshalls, and I saw some at Target, but when I went back to get them a few months later, I can’t find them anymore).

  • http://www.wendolonia.com Wendy

Yes! Carrie is correct — they are silicone baking cups. I got mine at Michael’s with a 40% off coupon but I’ve also seen them at Joann Fabric, Amazon and cooking stores like Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table. The ones I use are Wilton brand and I really like them because they’re thick and sturdy.

this is AWESOME!  We just went gluten-free and decided bento boxes are our best bet.  This is super helpful for the grocery store!  Thank you!

  • Jpowlessx2

My mom always froze my juice boxes, then wrapped the frozen juice box in a paper towel to catch the condensation from the thawing juice box and serve as a napkin. It kept things cool and was completely or almost defrosted and nice and cold for my lunch. So that’s one idea for keeping things cool.

Great ideas!  Quick question on the Laughing Cow cheese…Do your kids eat the wedge plain?  I’ve only ever used it to spread on crackers and sandwiches, but my kids love it.  I just can’t really see them eating it plain, but maybe I need to think outside the box a little.  Thanks for your response in advance, I appreciate it.
