I was out of town at a conference for a few days last week and through the weekend, so my weekly bento wrap-up post is coming out a little late. We had an interesting week though, with new lunch boxes and some dad-made bentos! Read on:
On Monday, Wyatt took his lunch to camp in the Laptop Lunch box. He had wheat thins, cheddar slices, pretzels, mandarin orange slices and leftover bratwurst cut into chunks. I checked in with him before sending the cold sausage in his lunch because he’s been developing stronger opinions about which foods should be served hot or cold, but he gave the thumbs up, so I felt safe putting them in. (He ate them, by the way.)
Wyatt was at camp all day last week so Augie and I found ourselves with an extra long day together. We decided to go on a little adventure to a fancy, far-away swimming pool so I needed to pack lunches for the both of us. I had received a Yubo lunch box from CHILDish for review over the weekend and Augie was dying to try it out so there was no way I could use anything but that to pack his lunch. (I’ll post a full review of this lunch box next month once we’ve had a chance to get to know it better, but for now, you’ll just get a peek at the lunches I pack in it.) This is what he had: a turkey and ham sandwich on half a french roll, pretzels, yogurt star cookies, cucumber slices and mandarin orange wedges.
I packed myself a lunch too: cucumber slices, ranch dressing, orange wedges, pretzels and a turkey and havarti sandwich made with the other half of the bun.
On Tuesday, Augie was back to preschool and he wanted his lunch in the Yubo again. He had pretzels, orange slices, carrot sticks, cucumbers and turkey meatballs from the freezer.
Wyatt had a very similar lunch. Since he doesn’t like cucumbers, I swapped wheat thins in in their place. I also added a small container of ranch dressing for his carrot dipping pleasure.
On Wednesday, Augie had pretzels, blackberries, strawberries, a mandarin orange, cucumber slices, a couple celery sticks, a small turkey sandwich and carrot sticks. The strawberries were from our garden and I picked the blackberries from bushes at a local park. And before you say it, I know what you’re thinking: hippie. Am I right?
Wyatt also had foraged blackberries, strawberries, pretzels, orange slices, turkey sandwiches, carrots with ranch for dipping and a little star cookie. The sandwiches were cut with our Star Wars cookie cutters but I made them with kind of crusty whole wheat sour dough bread, so the face impressions didn’t work at all. You definitely need a softer bread for this type of cutter to work right. Oh, and this was packed in a PlanetBox which we are also trying out and which I will also be reviewing next month.
Thursday I was up before the crack of dawn and off to Utah for my conference, so Zach packed the lunches. I think he did a terrific job! If you follow Wendolonia on Facebook you may have already seen this lunch he packed for Augie. It held Triscuits, soy cheese, pretzels, cucumbers, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a couple of licorice dogs, blueberries and more of those blackberries I picked. This was packed into a LunchBots Trio which we are also trying out and which I will also be reviewing next month. (Are you starting to notice a pattern here?)
Wyatt’s lunch had blueberries, blackberries, pretzels, garlic naan, Triscuits, Laughing Cow cheese and a couple of licorice dogs.
On Friday, Augie had cucumbers, turkey, grapes, and strawberries.

These were dad-made lunches too! Let’s give it up for Zach!
Disclosure: CHILDish, PlanetBox, and LunchBots all sent me complimentary lunch boxes for review.
