Review and Giveaway: Luna Protein Bars

by Wendy Copley on August 29, 2011

Thank you to LUNA Protein for providing me a LUNA Protein sample pack to review. The opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint.

Luna Protein Bar review

I have to be honest: I would never hire myself to write a review of protein bars.

I don’t go to the gym, I don’t lift weights, and I don’t enjoy eating protein bars at all. In fact, when my kids asked me what a protein bar was, I described them like this:

“Well, they’re made for grown-ups and they have protein and vitamins and stuff in them, but they taste really yucky on their own so they cover them in chocolate to make you want to eat them.”

Would you hire me? Yeah — probably not.

All that being said, LUNA sent me a box of their LUNA Protein Bars and I approached them with an open mind. I’ve had LUNA bars in the past and they were OK, but not something I would ever seek out or purchase. I was willing to have my mind changed though.

I decided to think of the them as a filling, chocolatey between meal snack. You see, I’m one of those terrible mom cliches. I fix my kids a healthy breakfast every morning and pack up lunches for them. But in the morning rush I often forget to eat breakfast myself. Then around 11 am when I’m at the park with Augie or out running errands I realize that I’m starving. So I put the LUNA Protein bars in my bag to have on hand for a mid-morning snack.

So what did I think?

Eh. They were all right.

They were filling enough to tide me over until lunch but they were still under 200 calories. Each bar has 12g protein, 3g fiber, calcium and folic acid. They’re high in sugar — averaging 14g per bar — and that makes them really, really sweet. But even with all that sweetness they still had that yucky protein bar flavor. Of the five flavors I tried — Cookie Dough, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate, and Chocolate Cherry Almond — the Chocolate Cherry Almond was my clear favorite. It was almost delicious, but not quite.

Would I buy them? No, probably not.  (Sorry, LUNA!)

The Giveaway!

OK, so have I sold you on these bars? Would you at least like to try them? If you are a protein bar lover, you might get your chance!

Most of the time I think they’re kinda yucky. I’ll choke one down if I have to, and I have been known to carry one in my purse for food emergencies.

Laura August 30, 2011 at 1:41 am

I love Luna Bars! Typically I enjoy them on a long bike ride or after a hard run. They’re a little too sweet for me to have as a snack but they definitely refuel me after a workout

Liz S. August 30, 2011 at 2:03 am

I don’t like them but I eat them because it the best alternative when I’m out on the go… although I must say Luna does make the better tasting bars…I am fixed on their Peppermint chocolate bars right now…maybe it’s because I’m wishing for cold fall/winter weather already 🙂

Lorelei03 August 30, 2011 at 2:05 am

I have never tried Luna bars. I tend to like the kiddie protein/nutrition bars  better then the adult counter part (like z bars instead of Cliff bars), but those flavors sound sorta yummy.

Cathy August 30, 2011 at 2:06 am

Huge fan of the concept but usually grab the cliff bars which aren’t protein focused!  Sure, I’ll give it a whirl.  Maybe that’s what I need after a work out.  Go figure!

Jennifer Blankenship Hunt August 30, 2011 at 2:07 am

Protein bars?  ICK!!  I’d rather lick peanut butter from a spoon (not like I’ve EVER done that).  With that being said, I’m always open to suggestion, and to be honest, the thought of anything Mint Chocolate Chip (like that of the said protein bar in the photo) has me intrigued!

Ghilmarsdottir August 30, 2011 at 2:11 am

I love protein bars, they are a easy way to give me the protein I need 🙂

seashoreknits August 30, 2011 at 2:19 am

Hmmm…I didn’t realize I’d be in the minority by really liking protein bars! 🙂
I’ve eaten them for years and haven’t met any I didn’t like. I think it is probably because I have hypoglycemia, and I need to eat a lot of protein and frequently during the day. These kind of bars have been a lifesaver to me. I think of them almost like medicine, so maybe that’s why I don’t really care too much how they taste. Because, well, to be honest…they aren’t that hot. But Luna Bars are definitely some of the very best out there. Thanks for the giveaway!!

I love Luna bars…especially the Lemon Zest.  Mmmmm… but most protein bars are hard to swallow, literally.  I’ve often had one in my purse for over a month because I avoid eating them.

I am not a huge fan of protein bars, but I like the idea of them and like to cut them in thirds and stick them in bentos.

Jessica H August 30, 2011 at 2:28 am

Sorry, I love protein bars. I think of them as healthy candy bars.

Brad P. August 30, 2011 at 2:34 am

i cant believe this!! me and my sister just got two i-pads for $42.77 each and a $50 amazon card for $9. the stores want to keep this a secret and they dont tell you. go here http://shr.tn/5tW5

Tasha August 30, 2011 at 2:42 am

I like some & hate others. Hit or miss!

Hugh Blair August 30, 2011 at 2:45 am

It’s rare that I can find a protein bar that doesn’t taste like cardboard. But I’ll try most things once – bring ’em on.

Elizabeth Stone August 30, 2011 at 2:48 am

I eat protein bars when I’m on the go and don’t have another snack available. But I agree, they have a strange texture/taste that definitely screams “protein bar.”

Campbell August 30, 2011 at 2:52 am

I really like their cranberry bar, and would *want* to like their protein bars…

Erin August 30, 2011 at 3:03 am

Many of them taste terrible, but there are a few I’ve tried that are edible. I don’t eat them everyday, but I think they are great for hiking, and my husband loves them!

Michele D August 30, 2011 at 3:09 am

I love Luna Bars! They feel more like a treat than anything else.

Mary Lynne Jones August 30, 2011 at 3:12 am

some are ok. some do have that protein bar covered in chocolate taste you described. I do however LOVE Special K’s protein bars. although like you said, they consider them meal replacement bars, but they’re more like a good snack for me. or they hold me over between the gym & lunch if I go straight to do errands after a good workout & didn’t eat breakfast. I’d give Luna a try if they sent it to me. my kids love protein bars..almost all kinds. (esp Clif bars)

NMM911 August 30, 2011 at 3:22 am

I don’t like most protein bars, and find the trade off of sugar to protein not worth the effort. But I’m certainly willing to try these! I do keep some of the Luna (regular) flavors in my desk for those days I work late or a colleague is hungry.

Whitney August 30, 2011 at 3:28 am

I am on the fence about most protein bars.  I buy odwalla bars for my kids and they like them, but they are a little more “baked good” like and a little less protein bar like.  THe last protein type bar I tasted was the clif Z bar since you said Wyatt likes them I got them for my kids.  They ate them but weren’t crazy about them, but neither was I.

Sara August 30, 2011 at 3:39 am

I have tried, and tried and re-tried protein bars of all types. The best i have found is Kashi Rolls, I have not had Luna bars. But I keep on trying them b/c I am on the go all the time and forget to eat then eat like crap. Maybe Luna is the ticket?

Devin August 30, 2011 at 3:51 am

I usually shy away from protein bars because of that “yucky protein bar flavor” you described! Oh, and they usually have quite a bit of calories that I don’t need. However, being pregnant and still dealing with the occasional aversions to anything dealing with beans, nuts, dairy or meat (ok, everything but bread!), the bars are often the only way I can get any protein in me. SO, that being said, I’ve tried many, many, many kinds of protein bars these past few months and would LOVE to try the Luna protein bars because I’m always searching for one that is edible (so few actually are)!

999bunny999 August 30, 2011 at 4:04 am

i used to eat protein bars but haven’t had one in a long time. i do get snackwell’s high protein granola bars though. they taste like chocolate rice crispy treats with a little more substance to them.

Carykauai August 30, 2011 at 4:25 am

I like protein bars on the run, also good to take on vacation, the kiddos can eat them instead of bad for you food on the go and they keep me full and without cravings 🙂

Mia Z August 30, 2011 at 4:33 am

I love protein bars! I’m on the cross country team at school and we often have practices from 6 AM to 7 AM. School starts at 7:30 AM so I don’t have anytime to eat and I usually just grab a granola/protein bar. It’s probably not healthy for me to do that, but I don’t have time to eat anything healthier. I’ve enjoy Cliff bars, but I’ve never tried Luna bars. I’ve heard mixed reviews about them so i’m not sure what to expect. :]

Dina August 30, 2011 at 4:45 am

I like to eat protein bars with a salad when I am trying to watch what I eat. The addition of the protein bar with the salad keeps me satisfied longer. Are they my ultimate favorite thing to eat in this world? NO. Will you occasionally find them in my cupboard? YES!

Kayla Bliss Caperoon August 30, 2011 at 5:29 am

I love some protein bars, hate others. I’ve grown rather fond of some of the Atkins bars. I worked in a supplement store for a while and tried just about every bar we had… sadly Luna bars were not among them.

Pam Davis August 30, 2011 at 5:35 am

I have a love/hate relationship with protein bars.  They are definitely not my favorite.  But I find them to be the perfect uber quick snack while I’m working with clients who haven’t scheduled in breaks for myself and my crew.

Bou Shin August 30, 2011 at 10:00 am

I’ve never tried a Luna bar (let alone any protein bar) before but I’ve heard of a lot of raving reviews about them. ^^

Colleenmariev August 30, 2011 at 11:24 am

I really like protein bars and would love to try these!  I like to keep some in my purse so when I’m out and about I can grab one if I get hungry instead of eating some disgusting fast food burger.

Carrie August 30, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I’d love to try these!

Sara August 30, 2011 at 2:07 pm

when I’m really, really desperate for a chocolate fix, I’ll eat a protein bar in lieu of resorting to the bitter baking chocolate in the cupboard…but I usually regret eating either of them

Becky @ Our Peaceful Home August 30, 2011 at 2:19 pm

I’m on again off again about protein bars, some I like and some I hate.

So-Pluhng Sou August 30, 2011 at 2:33 pm

As a full time work out of home mom, I absolutely love Protein bars for an on the go breakfast. My first taste of a Luna Bar was actually  back in college 5 years ago, so they’re great for ANY busy person..and what parent isn’t busy???

Kary August 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Luna bars are definitely my favorite type of “energy” bar (especially the cookies n cream) and I enjoy them the same way as you: as a mid-morning meal when my coffee has worn off and my stomach remembers that I didn’t eat breakfast.

Liz August 30, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I actually rather like the Luna protein bars, and have a few boxes in my house right now. The taste doesn’t bother me, and they do the trick by giving me enough sugar to get moving, but enough protein that I’m not starving again an hour later.

Miranda August 30, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I typically don’t eat bars.  I keep one or two in my purse, just in case of emergency!

Kristin August 30, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I love anything that gives me a quick easy way to get some nutrition.  Cliff is also an amazing company.  kristin27@msn.com

I know Ive tried a LUNA bar before but I can’t remember if I like it or not. Probably not such a good sign.

Sarah Cook August 30, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Most of the time they are a choke it down item, but some are good!

I’m not a big fan of protein bars in general, but Luna Bars are pretty tasty. I love the coconut one they make.

SB August 30, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Not a big fan, but willing to try. I’ve heard great things about Luna.

Leanne Yanabu August 30, 2011 at 10:05 pm

When I first saw a protein bar, it was in 1992, in Mali, West Africa, where I was a Peace Corps volunteer. A visitor from the states had brought some. I thought it was strange to bring such highly processed food so far when perfectly good whole food was available on the ground.

My biggest beef with protein bars are that they are so artificial. Even the ones that tout their natural ingredients have the equivalent of a vitamin crushed up and added in. Why not just take the vitamin pill separately and then have a spoonful of peanut butter on an apple slice, or have some cheese and crackers?  That being said, I sometimes enjoy the pure artificiality of these things, just as I enjoy seeing the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.

Teamcoollike33 August 30, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Some brands are great, some aren’t. I love the Z-bars, they’re healthy and taste pretty good!

Angela in Boulder August 31, 2011 at 12:20 am

I really like some of the Luna bars (the regular ones – like peppermint stick!), and the Luna protein bars are okay.  They’re too hard and chewy though, like you’re going to strain your jaw eating them.  That said, I don’t like any other protein bars AT ALL.  So Luna is the best in my book!

Yeyforsavings@yahoo.com August 31, 2011 at 1:44 am

I really like the chocolately flavored Luna bars (especially the “Nutz Over Chocolate” Yummeh!~ <3). Some Powerbar flavors are passable in a pinch, but I would much rather have a Luna bar. 🙂
