The Week in Bentos: June 27 – July 1, 2011

by Wendy Copley on July 1, 2011

Another lovely week of summer! Wyatt was in gymnastics camp this week and Augie was in day care so we had a full week of bentos.

Monday

Day Camp Snack #154

Monday’s camp snack was blueberries and deli turkey roll-ups.

Fancy Plate #4

After camp, I made fancy lunch plates for the boys. They had quesadillas cut into the shape of Darth Vader and a storm trooper (cut with our Star Wars cookie cutters), a honey stick “light saber”, sugar snap peas and blueberry “Death Stars”. The faces on the quesadillas were really clearly defined when I cut them, but they got kind of smooshed out as they cooked. Also, I couldn’t think of a good Star Wars-y name for the snap peas. Suggestions?

Tuesday

Toddler Bento #126

On Tuesday, Augie’s lunch was pretty freakin’ cute, if I do say so myself. I packed sugar snap peas, soy cheese teddy bears, watermelon chunks, leftover tri-tip, mixed veggies and a yaki onigiri.

Day Camp Snack #155

Wyatt had blueberries, cantaloupe and a granola bar. I totally spaced out when I packed the granola bar and Wyatt couldn’t eat it because it had nuts in it. He’s not allergic, but there was a kid at his camp who is so it was pretty irresponsible of me to put it in his lunch box. I felt absolutely terrible, but luckily the counselors were on the ball and caught it before the boy was exposed.

Wednesday

Toddler Bento #127

Augie’s lunch was leftover chicken korma over rice (I used a pre-fab sauce from a jar), blueberries, peanut butter filled pretzels and soycatash.

Day Camp Snack #156

Wyatt’s snack was cantaloupe (only the top level was cut into stars), blueberries, circles of garlic naan, and cheddar cheese chunks (again, only to top level was cut into stars).

Thursday

Day Camp Snack #157

I threw this snack together in about 3 seconds because we were running late. It was animal crackers and a half banana.

Friday

Day Camp Snack #158

And finally, today’s snack was cantaloupe chunks and a yogurt tube.

Have a great 4th of July weekend! My mom and dad are coming to visit us next week (hi Mom and Dad!) so I’m really excited!

The legs on the animal crackers totally looked like fingers on hands when I first looked at them!! I couldn’t figure out what freaky zombie hand crackers you found!

Do you make the garlic Naan or buy it?  I haven’t had any luck finding it at my local grocery stores.

May be a silly question, but how do you pack the bento lunches for school? My son is starting in  August and i am not sure if you place the boxes in lunch bags or just put the boxes in the bookbag.

  • Hi Kelly — I buy the garlic naan at Trader Joes. I’ve never screwed up the courage to make it myself, but I’d like to try it.

  • Hi Nithini — I pack the bento boxes inside insulated lunch boxes along with ice packs. I don’t recommend putting them right into a bookbag in case they leak or spill a little. If you’re careful about what foods you pack in the lunch, you might be able to get away without the ice packs, but I always put one in because I think it’s better to be safe than sorry!
