The Week in Bentos: June 6-10, 2011

by Wendy Copley on June 10, 2011

And finally, we have completed the last week of school! Phwew!

I’m so excited to be heading toward some more relaxed days and especially more relaxed mornings! Of course, Wyatt will be doing some camps this summer so we’ll still have to get places at certain times but now I’ll get to yell at him to get his shoes on a full half hour later. Ahhhh…leisure!

Sunday

Fancy Plate #1: June 5, 2011

OK, so this is obviously not a bento but Hey Jen Renee inspired me to step up our at-home lunches with her post about the lunches she makes her daughter. Usually lunch time sneaks up on me when we’re home and I end up just throwing something together while Augie screams and tries to pull the food off the cutting board. But this Sunday I got my act together and made this woodland scene! The trees were made of ham, the animals were soy cheese and the grass was made of peas, green beans and limas. You may notice that the trees are a little lumpy — that’s because I tucked the scraps of ham and cheese behind them.

A ephalant made of cheese!

Augie liked it!

Monday

First Grade Bento #462: June 6, 2011

On Monday, Wyatt’s lunch was giant mutant* strawberries, garlic naan and catsup sandwiches, pirate’s booty and cubed tofu.

*Not really mutant, just big.

Tuesday

Toddler Bento #120

On Tuesday Augie’s lunch was packed in the Panda Bento Box: leftover egg noodles with butter and garlic, two turkey meatballs, some frozen mixed veggies and some broccoli leftovers too.

Wyatt had school lunch because I was trying to use up the balance on our lunch account.

Wednesday

Toddler Bento #121

I packed the kids lunches for Wednesday the night before so I had a little extra time when I was putting Augie’s bento together. He got fancy giraffe tofu for the first time (the spots were drawn on with food-safe markers). I also packed some green grapes, mixed veggies and a yaki onigiri rice ball decorated with a nori butterfly.

1st Grader Bento #463

Wyatt had strawberries, a s’mores bar, pulled pork barbecue and mini buns to make little pork sandwiches with. And that, my friends, was the last lunch of the school year!

Thursday

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER! WOOOO HOO! School had a noon dismissal so I took Wyatt and his best bud to lunch. They chose Burger King. Blech! I couldn’t even talk them into McDonalds.

Friday

Family Bento #50

Wait…you didn’t think we were done, did you? Nope! I’ve got a few more lunches for you to check out. The boys and I kicked off our summer vacation with a trip to the beach today. Of course I had to pack up some beachy bentos! The big one is mine. I packed a turkey and cheddar sandwich with tomatoes and a little chipotle ranch dressing. The boys had turkey roll-ups and chunks of garlic naan. We all had green grapes and we each got one of the last three strawberries.

Wendy, I was wondering when you show turkey meatballs in your lunches — are they the pre-made ones from TJ’s, or are they homemade? I worry about giving G. too much sodium w/frozen meatballs.

  • They’re the sodium-laden TJ’s ones. They’re bad — I know it — but my kids looooove them so I try to only send them when we don’t have anything else in the house.
