A few comments for you: My son, in Kindergarten (full day) had a similar issue with both snack and lunch. In my experience, they do not give the kids anything like enough time to eat; and they require that the kids all finish before they can go play -- thus making them choose between eating and play. Guess which boys always choose?
Second is that in about Kindergarten, kids seem to outgrow the morning snack. My 8-year-old son eats an enormous breakfast and a regular lunch -- and has absolutely no appetite at 10:00 in the morning. Hasn't for years.
Finally (for your future), in about 2nd grade, boys start making fun of other boys' lunches, if they are at all nutritious. There's a lot of peer pressure to have either Lunchables or sandwich, chips, and a cookie. My kid won't eat either daily (thank goodness), so our agreement with each other is that he will eat the leftover bits of his lunch as an after school snack, with a couple of other additions (usually he comes home with vegetables, and I add olives or nuts and a few whole-wheat crackers).

My daughter goes to full day Kindergarten and I have to pack snack and a lunch, all of which are Bento-Style. Although she has the same setup, eat first then play, they give them more time to eat so it doesn't take away from the playtime. I found too that having Gabs pick out her lunch helps with the consumption...=)

This is exactly what is happening to us. They get a whole 15 minutes combined for snack and playtime. Some kids don't even bring a snack at this point. I think if I were 5 I would pick play over snack too.

At my school we have stopped the "eat first, play later" in an attempt to get kids to actually EAT their food instead of just rushing to go out and play. It has worked wonders! The kids actually eat their lunch and they come into the classroom much more ready to learn.
