The Week in Bentos – Before and After: May 19-22, 2009

by Wendy Copley on May 25, 2009

A couple weeks ago, Heather requested a post with photos of Wyatt’s lunch boxes after he came home. Excellent idea! It was a bit tough to remember to take pictures of the lunches in the afternoons because I’m not in the habit like I am in the mornings, but I managed to get a photo every day. Yay me!

This was a pretty typical week for lunch consumption. Sometimes the lunches I pack go over really well and Wyatt eats everything. Sometimes a lunch will come home almost untouched. Typically though, there’s just one thing left in his bento and it often leaves me scratching my head, wondering why he didn’t eat that particular food.

Preschool Bento #181: May 19, 2009

Tuesday’s lunch had a bun stamped with food safe markers, two turkey meatballs cut into quarters and skewered, a monkey box full of catsup and a big hand full of grapes.

Preschool Bento #181: the aftermath

This is what was left in the lunch when it came home. The bun, which was pulled from the freezer and thawed, was pronounced “stale”. Guess those need to be toasted to be edible. I was surprised the grapes were all gone because often there are quite a few of those left.

Preschool Bento #182: May 20, 2009

Wednesday I sent left over rice from dinner the night before that I formed into rice balls using a mold, corn, strawberries and some salami.

Preschool Bento #182: the aftermath

OK, so lunch consumption was so-so today. He ate the strawberries and salami and it looks like he had two bites of the bear rice ball. He said he didn’t eat the corn because he “doesn’t like it when it’s cold.” Fair enough, but he used to like it so that’s new.

Preschool Bento #183: May 21, 2009

Thursday, Wyatt got leftover pork tenderloin from dinner the night before. I cut it into chunks and skewered it. This is is favorite dinner, so I expected it to go over well. I also put in strawberries, a banana chunk and some cheesy crackers for a little treat.

Preschooler Bento #183: The Aftermath

SCORE! I don’t often see completely empty lunch boxes..

Preschooler Bento #184: May 22, 2009

After having such great success with Thursday’s lunch, I decided to copy it on Friday. We were out of pork, so I sent skewers of baked tofu instead. I also sent a mini blueberry muffin, another half banana and more strawberries.

Preschooler Bento #184: the aftermath

They were out of the teriyaki tofu at TJ’s so I had to get the “savory” flavor instead. It obviously didn’t go over so well.

Did you guys like this? Or were you grossed out by looking at our garbage? If people like this, I might continue to take after photos from time to time.

I enjoyed seeing this both before and after.
My son eats the same thing for lunch every day at his request… but I notice he seems to be getting burned out on some things, now. So seeing the variety of your lunches is giving me ideas of new things to try. I also like the imaginative packing & presentation ideas. I’m going to have to look into this whole Bento thing. My son is special needs & not much of an eater. He takes meds that can diminish his appetite so getting him to eat is always a concern. I’m always checking the lunches to see how much he ate. This might just be a way to get him interrested in lunch, again. Thanks for the inspiration – seeya on Twitter.

  • I love the After pics, but don’t think you need to do it all the time πŸ™‚ Not because I’m grossed out, but because I’d rather have you make notes for a book on the topic than spend more time processing pics!

So glad Wyatt will have documentary evidence of your supermom superpowers when he’s grown up.

  • the after photos reassure me that Evie is not weird. She leaves some of the best parts in her bento-and only sometimes does she eat the rest for a snack. I had to laugh though-one day my hubby fixed her lunch-a peanutbutter sandwich on rye(?)and about a cup of golden raisins. I wish I’d had a picture of that(and the all leftovers).

I love the bentos – thanks for sharing. What kind of containers do you use? Where did you get them?

Interesting to see what kids eat πŸ™‚ Yes, I agree, showing the “afters” all the time is not necessary.

I’d be interested to see a copy of your grocery list though. It’s amazing to see how many different types of meals you can put together.

  • I found your blog via http://www.everydaycelebrating.com/ and I love the bento idea. My daughter starts kindergarten next year and I can hardly wait to send her cute lunches! I like the before and after picts a lot. Thanks for sharing your ideas. The only thing I would love more is if you tagged all your bento posts for quick access. Thanks!

The after photos are great. It is fun to see what is actually eaten and what is not. This will come in handy one day when I have kids. You are such a good mom to put so much attention into his lunch everyday. Kudos!

    awww! cute, i love it!

  • What a great idea..I'm a big fan of variety when it comes to eating..love the photos..and will use this idea when my kids are old enough to eat lunch in school..right now they are just starting solids and teething ha!

  • Mintie

It's kind of funny seeing what he “sends back”. Not having kids, I think this is precious. I suppose if I were a mom, I would be annoyed by this.
