The Week in Bentos: May 5-8, 2009

by Wendy Copley on May 9, 2009

Whew! I’m back! Wyatt was out of school for all of  last week because he was sick. His appetite was really low too, so he barely ate anything. But anyway, here we are back again with a round of lunches!

Preschooler Bento #172: May 5, 2009

Tuesday I managed to pack 7 different foods into Wyatt’s lunch. There were whole wheat honey pretzel sticks, banana bread (invisible under the pretzels), a strawberry, ham “roses”, steamed snap peas and grapes. he got a brownie for dessert.

Wednesday I pulled out the food markers and let Wyatt write his own name on the bun. OK — not really. I did that stinkers job. I’m still getting the hang of those markers. I also sent tofu, strawberries and grapes.

Thursday I made a little fruit salad out of strawberries, grapes and apple cubes. That went in the lunch along with banana bread strips, peas and some ham roll-ups.

Preschooler Bento #175: May8, 2009

Friday was a very sad day in this house. As I was beginning to pack his lunch Wyatt intercepted me and started telling me how other kids had different lunches than him. Lunches that just went in their lunch boxes and the foods in them weren’t cut into shapes. And then he said it:

“Mom, can I just have a regular lunch like the other kids?”

Nooooooooooo! I knew it would happen, but I didn’t think it would be so soon!!

I carefully hid my anguish and calmly asked him what kind of things he’d like in his lunch. He chose a whole apple, some tofu and a whole banana. So that’s what I sent. Bleh. Boring, isn’t it? No fun for Mama, that’s for sure!

And when it came home, the only thing that he’d eaten was the food that was in a special box and cut into shapes.

I rest my case.

Say it ain’t so!!! Wyatt, please, don’t cave, man! Those other kids are begging their moms to make thier lunches look like yours!! Happy Mother’s Day, Wendy. You are a great example to us all of how to make our children’s every day happenings extra special.

Please don’t stop making fabulous bento lunches! If my mom made my food look this good, maybe I would’ve eaten more and not be stick thin my entire childhood!
Tell Wyatt that the other kids should be envious of HIM! Can I borrow your mom Wyatt? I want her to make lunch for me! LOL!

  • Don’t worry guys! I’m going to use all my persuasive techniques to convince him he still wants me to pack him bentos. And if he absolutely *refuses* I’ll start packing them for myself!

What are you planting in your sq ft garden? Where did you get the specs and such? I would really like to try this, I am getting to be an old woman and a big garden is too much for me. But tomatoes, squash, okra, just a few things maybe I could handle.

  • I was just gonna say that for one week, I’d like to see the aftermath photos of what he doesn’t eat. You know, just as a social experiment. Did I show you my banana case when you were here? It’s fantastic.

  • Heather — that’s a *great* idea. I’m totally going to do that!

  • Oh also — your banana case rocked!
