The Week in Bentos: March 3-6, 2009

Preschooler Bento #149: March 3, 2009

Tuesday I sent baked tofu cut into chunks and arranged in a checkerboard, a piece of banana, some grapes and these weird crackers that Wyatt loves.

Preschooler Bento #150: March 4, 2009

Wednesday’s lunch was not a bento, but it was a super hit with the boy. He got leftover mashed potatoes (in the Thermos), sliced strawberries and some Transformer fruit snacks (aka: candy). This isn’t the most balanced lunch I’ve ever packed and I don’t send total crap treats very often, but once in a while I think it’s nice to give your kid a meal that will make him deliriously happy. Nutrition be damned!

Preschooler Bento #151: March 5, 2009

Thursday’s lunch box had a home made mini dinner roll, hot dog chunks, catsup (in the little yellow box) and strawberries. Looking at this photo after the fact, I realize that this lunch probably got completeley jumbled up on the trip to school. It’s not packed tightly enough for everything to stay in place, so it’s likely that everything¬† got tossed around in the box.

Preschool Bento #152: March 6, 2009

Today’s lunch was peaches with sprinkles, a bun (not the home made ones) and a new kind of baked tofu, honey sesame.

Have a great week everyone!

  • Oops — I meant to say what they were in the original post. They’re called 34 Degrees crackers. I got them at Costco and they’re super thin and crispy. I’m not sure what they’re made out of, but they seem a little like a rice cracker. I’m not so hot on them, but Wyatt likes them.

I LOVE the Bento Boxes you make each week! My husband is 1/2 Japanese and I’ve always loved learning more about his family history and incorporating some of the fun culture (like Bento Boxes) into our daily lives. You’ve given me so many ideas. How fun!

What a great site! I’m so happy that your son loves our crackers and has made an exception to his Saltines habit! Just out of curiosity, what don’t you like about them? We’re always interested in consumer feedback. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful Bento creations and getting inspiration for my kids’ lunches.

  • Hi Craig — I don’t dislike the crackers. They’re fine, but I tend to prefer something a little heartier in a cracker and they’re pretty delicate. I like having them around though because I’d much rather my son eat your crackers than saltines.

    Dear Wendy:
Thank you for sharing all your bentos. I really enjoy them. Your son seems to eat the same kind of things mine does. I love the bento idea, I ordered some supplies over the Internet; that stuff is hard to find in Georgia. I just wanted to tell you these show great love for your children. In the way another mom may sew or do crafts with her child. I think one day when they are on their own they will miss mom’s lovely lunches.

I love looking at all your delicious creations, so much so that i have a shopping trip planned next week to go to Richmond Daiso to pick up supplies. I am so not a PAC mom, but my kid will have the must unique/healthy packed lunches at school

Wondering if you could possibly take a few photos of the final pack product IE how he carries it to School … I have only seen photos of the boxes open and without lids, so i am curious to see what they look like closed and secure and in the bag (or what ever you send it in)

And i have to ask – will your son eat the peas/corn cold? and if so, do you send along a little spoon?

Hi Wendy I love your site and totally excitied about my preschoolers lunch.
I was wondering how large your boxes are. I ordered some and they seem so small.
Also does the food shift around or stay put.
thanks for all the great ideas.
