I remember that my mom used to refuse to play with me sometimes if I got too bad; she'd stop a board game right in the middle if I was gloating about my success or whining about being behind. I think that was pretty effective strategy. There may have been a tantrum in the short term when she walked away from the game, but it did eventually teach me some basic board-game civility.
